Croatia did a terrific job at holding the portugal attack for most of the game. Portugal has a pretty good attack, but the fact that they saddle themselves with an overage star striker who can be no help on the attack except for wandering around the opposing third waiting for opportunities to come his way where he can put in the strike means they are not firing on all cylinders. The Portugal team would have a much better chance if they were to play Ramos instead of Ronaldo.

It was looking like Croatia was going to win the game until a somewhat debatable penalty decision gave Ronaldo the chance to put in the Portugal equalizer. But it was not until the coach replaced Ronaldo with Ramos that the portugal attack began to weigh in their favor. Ramos scored the go ahead goal to win the game for Portugal.

This game is evidence that Ronaldo holds Portugal back rather than enhancing their chances. Starting Ramos instead of Ronaldo Portugal would be better for Portugal's chances. The team can´t afford to be carrying an aging star striker with tired legs.

This game was the story of this world cup so far. Many were assuming Argentina would have an easy time of this. Yet Cabo Verde did an excellent job of throttling down the Argentina attack. They played a smart, very disciplined game with a lot of heart, and they capitalized on their chances to put Argentina in fear of the outcome.

It was a real cliff hanger which was only decided in the dying minutes of extra time. Bravo Cabo Verde!

It is to be noted that while game announcers commented about the superior quality of the england side, the mexicans clearly demonsrtated the opposite on the pitch. That for most of the first half the Mexican side showed they were the better team. They played a beautiful game of quick pinpoint passes, rapid regaining posession of the ball, exerting near constant pressure in the England third.

Bellingham was brilliant for England. Two goals, and a key defensive intervention on an otherwise sure goal. His was a great all round contribution.

England's Jarell Quansah earned a red card early in the second half.

This is where Mexico lost the game.

With a man advantage and only one goal down, they needed to regain their first half composure, take advantage of the extra man, applying pressure without taking defensive risks over the plenty of time they had.

Instead with all the time in the world they pressed on with wild abandon, opening up defensive risks which led to a penalty upon which Kane scored another gol putting them deeper in a hole.

Afterwards, they were not able to dig themselves out and under pressure their attacks lacked precision and their accuracy and earlier quality was gone. Had they tied it up without the Kane penalty, they would have had a man advantage until 120 minutues + added time to get the winner.

Note: What would most likely have been the most impressive goal of the tournament was disqualified by a minor foul a long time earlier, a long distance back. My impression in this match is that the referreeing was more forgiving towards Argentina than it was towards Egypt. Nothing stains a tournament more than imbalance in that regard. I feel Egypt was unfairly handicapped. Who is to say who might have won, but Egypt deserved a fair shot, and they played some very good football.

England came out playing a strong game, looking like the better team. When they scored the go ahead goal, their coach effectively ruined their chances. He pulled off strikers in favour of defense, thereby nullifying their attacking threat and surrendering control of the ball to Argentina leaving them the freedom to play to their strength and leaving Messi room to apply his creativity. From then on they were hanging on against an onslaught which would eventually overwhelm. This was the worse coached game I have ever seen.

Argentina played for the draw from the beginning. They did not dare risk opening themselves up by attacking.

Enzo Fernández was sent off at 90+3 after picking up a costly second yellow card for a reckless challenge. So Argentina must play the two extra 15 a man down.

Finally after going down a goal, argentina made a game of the last extra time because they had no choice.

The penalty call agains Senegal is on an extremely minimal and suspect infraction, one that in no way affected play, more likely a dive than an infraction and with no real meaningful contact. The referree does not call anything. After a very long delay, VAR comes in, ref goes to view, comes back and awards a penalty. NO WAY that was the referree deciding! I feel no uncoerced referree would have awarded a penalty here. So I surmise that decision came from FIFA on the earphones.

FIFA did, no doubt, have money to gain in TV residuals etc... by eliminating Senegal instead of Belgium. So what is one to think? Continuing abuse of the African continent, that is what.

Senegal were robbed of their legitimate and hard earned, well deserved fair chance at penalties. The RED CARD goes to FIFA.
